What is an SSRI?

If you suffer from depression or anxiety, you might have heard of a class of medications called SSRIs. But what are they, exactly, and how do they work? And what are the benefits and side effects of traditional pharmaceutical SSRIs, compared to natural remedies like Kanna?

First, let's talk about what SSRIs are. SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are a type of medication that is commonly used to treat depression and anxiety. They work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain, which can help to lift mood and reduce anxiety.

But what about the side effects? While SSRIs can be effective for many people, they can also cause a range of side effects, including nausea, dizziness, headaches, and sexual dysfunction. In some cases, SSRIs can even increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, particularly in young people.

Now, let's compare that to Kanna. Kanna is a natural remedy that has been used for centuries to improve mood, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. And while there is still much to learn about how Kanna works, it appears to have a similar mechanism of action to SSRIs, by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain.

But here's the key difference: unlike traditional SSRIs, Kanna has been reported to have few to no side effects. In fact, many users of Kanna report feeling more energized, focused, and motivated, with no negative effects on their sex drive or other aspects of their health.

Of course, it's important to note that Kanna is not a replacement for traditional pharmaceuticals in all cases. For some people, SSRIs may be the best option for managing their depression or anxiety. And in some cases, combining pharmaceuticals with natural remedies like Kanna can be more effective than either on their own.  However combining ANY drug or herb must be prescribed by a doctor, herbalist and/or naturopath.  With that said, compounding herbs is an age old practice.

In fact, many pharmaceutical medications are inspired by or derived from natural remedies. For example, aspirin was originally derived from willow bark, and many cancer treatments are based on compounds found in plants.

So if you're considering switching from pharmaceuticals to natural remedies like Kanna, it's important to do so with the guidance of your doctor. Ceasing to take prescribed medications without medical supervision can be dangerous and even fatal in some cases. Similarly, combining medications or supplements can be risky and should only be done under the guidance of a medical professional or herbalist.

In conclusion, SSRIs can be effective for managing depression and anxiety, but they can also cause a range of side effects. Natural remedies like Kanna can be a safe and effective alternative, with few to no reported side effects.  Just remember to always do your own research, start low and go slow!
